I feel that Genki is a bit more approachable than Tobira, I didn't finish it yet but I think the Tobira Beginning Japanese Textbook has more vocabulary. In terms of grammar points and topics they are very similar, so it comes down to your personal preference and time. I really loved genki. You should give it a try!

Tobira (one of the go-to textbooks for N3) has recently published its own N5/N4 book: Tobira 1: Beginning Japanese. Looking at the Tobira’s sample pages, I think I would prefer Tobira over Genki if I were to begin my Japanese learning journey today because I like the layout, explanations and content. A few facts. Tobira 1 has 3 units with 3-4 lessons each. It seems to be a lot more text heavy than Genki 1. There are longer dialogues and longer & way more reading passages. It's a lot more colourful than Genki. Vocab is listed in 2 different ways, in a simple list, and with pictures for each new word to help you memorize them. Anki Details. Along with Anki for vocab, I use WaniKani. I try to average about 10 Lessons/Day, which comes to around 3 weeks/level. (I.e., I go up one level at about the same time I move on to the next lesson in Beginner Tobira.) I tried Genki. I gave up in a couple of weeks. I tried Japanese From Zero. I made it a month before losing focus. I tried Genki again; same result. Then I tried Tobira and now after 2 months (~1.5-2 hrs a day), I'm not only continuing, but going STRONG. I'm halfway through book 1 and my motivation hasn't waned.
