Imprinting raises the actual stats, first of all. Your ptera probably hatched with like 320% melee and got up to 350% with the imprinting you did. You'll get an additional invisible bonus when you're riding it, 30% damage and damage reduction if it's 100% imprinted, so 15-16% for you.

Am I doing something wrong? I play at official small tribes. I have 2 procoptodons (male and female). I had 2 juvenile megatheriums, so I put one of the in the pouch of the female procoptodon. The first megatherium asked for kaddles. I pressed E, but I get only 50% of imprinting. I would like settings that allow me to get 20%-33% per imprint at 20-45 minutes cycles. I like to feel the game, but have no interest in one touch imprinting for 100%. At the same time, if you imprint babies in the pouch, they get double the imprint. This takes a little stress out of having to be there on time for all imprints on official servers, because otherwise you don’t get to 100%, and then you can’t get the full imprint bonus. Walk imprints with slow running babies are also no problem in the kangaroo.

We had noticed that we were no longer seeing the Imprinted 'Brofist' symbol on most of our dinos. I'm not actually sure on this. I would assume that if the hatchling were imprinted to a rider, it would get whatever bonus was given. But I'm not sure one way or another if you get that extra bonus without being the one to imprint it.
