The engine would run better with 6.00/6.20 gears in the 1/8mi. i would say that a 388"er might run 1 tenth better with this much weight, however a 406" junkyard motor, with brodix heads and 6.20 gears i ran 6.26 in the same car. If you were to build 2 motors, identical except that one was a 383, and the other was the 406, the 406 will make more power across the entire rpm range. Choosing the larger motor allows you to attain you HP goal at a lower projected RPM than the smaller 383.It will make lots of torque and very good power. But since you want the 400, then just build a 400 (406 at .030 over bore). It can run as cool in an S-10 as it did in the pickups that most of them came in. The 383 does have a ton of tq, and doesn't need to rev to hit good HP numbers. I believe that since you don't plan on driving this a lot, that you should consider the 454. More money without question, but you get what you pay for. The difference between the two is very noticable, the 454 will always have more low end.
