In theory, it will detect if the fob is inside the car vs outside, but these systems are not that precise and get it wrong sometimes.

When you pull the door panel off, you have the two cables. One the lock, the other the door handle. Make sure they are fully seated/snapped into the bracket holding them and the ball end is in the socket. If the lock popped out of there it would make noise and maybe wiggle but wouldn't actually fully engage.
