The GM 929 is often called an "old", design, but I'm not sure what its missing when compared to newer cams. The wider LSA of the first two would seem to have a low to mid range torque advantage over the Elgin cam. Summit 1101 - 194/204 @ .050, .398/.420 lift, 112 LSA. GM 929 195/202 @ .050" .390/410 lift, 112 LSA.
Best initial timing for mild SBC. I have a GMPP 350/290 hp engine. The 222/222 @.050 cam was mismatched to my driving needs (need better economy), so I have swapped it to a Summit 1101 camp that is 194/204 @.050 . I have static timing at about 11, and total (with centrifugal) at about 30. First I pulled it out and installed Speed pro 10.1 pistons. I bought a zz4 cam 208/221 & .474/.510 along with proper hyd roller lifters. I thought I was ready to go :smash: but the heads were ported by a newbie. All the chambers were messed up etc.Power isn't the main goal. Before you say build a 4 cylinder or V6 let's just say it has to be a SBC. A smaller bore/ longer stroke vs. a bigger bore/ shorter stroke of about the same displacement (ie. 305 vs. 302) should get better mileage. The longer stroke should make better low end torque which should help with mileage.

The bore size is going to be real close, and the wire bead is not flattened and will leave an impression in the surface of the head.
