This was one of the (unfortunately) rare times a car rag actually did tests over several manufacturers. They took a garden variety 500 HP 383 SBC and started swapping intakes.

Its good from idle to 7200 RPM and has the same airflow as a single plane. I run this type all the time on my 406 motors that I build. ... Jul 10, 2009 · 406 is just a 400 bore .030" oversize with the factory stock 3.75" stroke, you could also use a 3.875" "stroker" crank to make a 421 at the .030" overbore in a 400. Either of these, and the 383 will easily be able to make 500+ hp and you won't need to rev them over 6800 rpm to do it.

Build the 400. You can put you 350 crank in a 400 if you use bearing. spacers 2.45" vs the 400's 2.65" main bearings. As long as you use the 400's heads or have a. new set drilled for the steam holes you should. not have any cooling problems. The "normal" way to build a 383 is a 3.75" stroke. crank from a 400 turned down to 2.45" mains.

I think it would be a lot more to build a 383 compared to a 396. At least were I'm at, there are the '66-'67 396 blocks everywhere and they all have steel cranks.
