I like to soak items like that in a slightly acid water tank with a pump running for a few days to a few weeks so that any chemicals that want to dissolve and leech out can leech out into the tank of mildly acidic water, which is tap water with little vinegar, rather than into the fish.

In one of his latest videos he empties a mess of a pond he once had. You could just see how little he cares about the fish in there.
