Personally, I carry one 2x2 of canned food (usually canned bacon), one soda, and a stack of chlorine all inside a cooking pot. This allows for one back up food if you get low and still can't find an animal to hunt. One back up liquid for if you can't get to water quick enough to purify a pot with chlorine.

Yes you're right. Rotten food items (excluding meats) are poisonous which causes the chemical poisoning sickness if you eat a lot of them in a short time. Eating just one fruit is harmless even if you eat it in one go. The poison will disappear from your body in a couple of minutes. The same applies to burned food.
