They also loose the benefit of the Mossberg over the 870's in that they use a cross bolt safety instead of the tang safety.The interesting thing is that the Remington 870 DM comes with a super magnum bolt and a regular barrel with a 3-inch chamber. According to Remington, they fired 100,000 rounds to test the new version, and it works perfectly. The new shotgun looks like a completely finished product with the same quality that Remington is known for.

But if you can get an 870 from before Remington quality took a dip it should be fine. They've both got crossbolt safeties so the biggest difference is probably the magazine capacity (Mav holds 5, 870 holds 4) and the ability to take a tube extension (870 can with some work, Mav can't). New 870s are terrible.

While I have no issue with the newer 870 Express, the older one seems to be built with more care and attention than the newer one. The 1987 clearly is just a simplified version of a regular 870....the newer one is very much a budget gun. As a comparison, think Mossberg/Maverick. The 2005 870 Express is on the top and the 1987 is on the bottom ...Go to the 590, there are several differences, like a metal trigger guard and safety, thicker barrel, different barrel mounting system, and a steel receiver, just to name a few. all 3 have the 3 inch chamber. 835, you can go to 3.5 inch shells.
