You need to spend a fair amount of time in the radiation zone, and I believe it gets worse the closer to the Aurora you get, but you will eventually start to take damage. Had this happen and I wasn't able to fix it. If you can get the prawn to stand back up by putting it through a teleporter but it was still glitched and the game was pretty much broken for me. I think the game should oblige you to build a secondary base in the lava zone which you must use to recharge your prawn suit. The game as it is gives no incentive to build secondary bases.
