Not bad drives ok and sounds good. My question is timing. The motor is a 73 350 with Edelbrock heads, intake, and 650 carb, with a crane cam. I am using an hei distributor.

It really makes no difference which terminal is #1, as long as it is followed by #8, then #7, etc. Start by setting the #1 cylinder at TDC in the firing position, then establish which terminal is going to be #1 by installing the distributor.
I would start by double checking your wires on the cap are going to the correct cylinders following the firing order. If you have swapped a couple it could still run and depending which cylinders are affected could result in the backfiring issue. Basically confirm your firing order of 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2.
