If that's still the case then aluminum butts are the way to go, period. For $20-40 less a rod you can go with slick butts. You will gain some stability with the aluminum butts and certainly longevity. The Penn 309 used to be the standard for bay trolling. Most guys used 30 lb mono in spring / summer - then put on 30lb Monel for late fall / winter. It's a good reel for spring - I'd stick with lighter lures - up to say 10 ozs. Not sure it will handle big umbrellas.
