You don't need to enclose your entire base with walls, just an area, with an open gate, where you will move your survivors to when you get attacked. And you need to move ALL of your survivors there if you want them to come to you through the open gate. As far as dealing with the ranged mobs, kill them first. Of course keep a space open like 2-3 space, so the mobs can get into it and to your people and doesnt attack the fence.
