Sep 1, 2008 · For SRI mutual funds in the US and UK, there is little evidence that the risk-adjusted returns of SRI funds are different from those of conventional funds (see, e.g., Bauer et al., 2005). However, SRI funds in Continental Europe and Asia-Pacific underperform benchmark portfolios (Renneboog et al., submitted for publication). examine whether the financial performance of these funds is related to the characteristics of the extra-financial screening process. Our sample is composed with French SRI mutual funds. Modern SRI takes its roots in the US in the 1970s and spread slowly to other Anglo-Saxon countries and to the rest of the world.We find that SRI mutual funds care about their investee firms' ESG performance. In terms of economic significance, a one standard deviation increase in a firm's ESG score (ESG S) increases the odds of receiving investment from SRI mutual funds by approximately 12.4% to 41.6% in the following year.We provide evidence that investor demand for socially responsible or sustainable and responsible (SRI) mutual funds differs from that of conventional funds ...
