In my AP English course, at least, we read a great many classics (nothing post 1950, as far as I can remember). As for what's best for the test - I really don't know, as I took it over 25 years ago, and things have undoubtedly changed since then. But when I took it, having read broadly as well as deeply helped a great deal.
